Mechanical Peace
2016, wood-frame mechanical installation, 6 ft length x 6 ft width x 7 ft height
Mechanical Peace is my first installation, exploring the practice of representing natural phenomena—such as water, air, and lightning—through mechanical means. The project reflects my search for a harmonious balance between my spirit and physical body. Inspired by the tactile and sensory joy found in the natural world, from the touch of wind to the sound of falling leaves, this piece aims to mimic and evoke those experiences in a constructed, artificial way.
The installation invites the audience to engage with "false natural phenomena" through interactive elements driven by spiral handles and wires. While the movements are stiff and mechanical, they parallel the purity of nature’s organic motions, both rooted in physical laws. This clumsy yet honest imitation creates a unique sense of peace, encouraging viewers to reflect on the parallels between natural and artificial worlds.
Mechanical Peace blends the joy of natural elements with the awkwardness of mechanical mimicry, fostering a contemplative experience that connects physical sensations to emotional serenity.
